Mountain Air

Mount Ruapehu Auckland

Mountain Air is the company to contact if you want air transport from a North Island City to an "off the beaten track" place or to experience a scenic flight.

Our special skill is servicing grass airfields in remote areas to provide access to wilderness experiences in the back country and mountain regions of New Zealand.

Mountain Air was formed in 1980 by Robyn and Keith McKenzie in the Central North Island and now has offices at Auckland International Airport, Great Barrier Island, Tongariro National Park, Turangi, Flat Hills and Taumarunui.

Mountain Air operates seven aircraft designed for landing on grass airfields, and one helicopter. Owner Director Keith McKenzie QSM is the company's helicopter pilot. He received his Queen's Service Medal for alpine rescues in the Tongariro National Park and for assisting with various difficult police operations.

The Company operates New Zealand wide air charter services from all bases, particularly Auckland Airport where international visitors can depart as soon as they arrive in New Zealand to a remote lodge for fishing, golf or wilderness experiences.

The scenic flight over the Tongariro National Park is a volcanic and thermal voyage through three spectacular volcanoes operating seven days a week. Some members of groups or coach tours can 'catch a plane' over the Park between airfields on State Highway One, while their vehicle keeps going. This means group members are not asked to wait around while some of them are taking a scenic flight. The car and the plane arrive at the other side of the Park at the same time.

The helicopter is often used by vulcanologists studying and testing the thermal and volcanic activity in the hot crater lake of Mt Ruapehu. Transportation by helicopter to remote trout fishing locations in the Central North Island is popular. Keith's specialty is helicopter filming and photography. A helicopter tour of the Tongariro National Park can be arranged 24 hours in advance.

New Zealand Tourism Award finalist 1999 for Transportation and Touring Section.
