Waimangu Volcanic Valley
Wonderful experiences in the World's newest geothermal system
On 10 June 1886 tremendous eruptions of Tarawera Volcano and nearby Lake Rotomahana devastated their surrounding area. The legendary Pink and White Terraces were destroyed and four local villages were buried under a thick layer of mud and ash. Lake Rotomahana exploded to 20 times its original size and seven new craters were erupted forming Waimangu Volcanic Valley.
Today at Waimangu Volcanic Valley, one of Rotorua's leading thermal attractions, you can learn the stories of the 1886 Tarawera Eruption and of Waimangu, as you explore our rich social, cultural and natural history. We offer a boat cruise and a range of eco-focused walks and hikes through this unique hydro-thermal area that is the home of many features of World significance. Walks and hikes range from 45 minutes to over 4 hours and the boat cruise on Lake Rotomahana lasts for 50 minutes.
Half day and full day guided sightseeing tours, including transport to and from Rotorua city are also available.
Waimangu Volcanic Valley Rotorua is a multiple NZ Ecotourism Award winner which can be enjoyed by visitors of all ages and fitness. Open daily from 8.30am.
